The inaugural FIBA Masters Open finished in Greece on 12 July. Three from this club were there with Ireland: head coach Niall McDermott on the bench of the Over-60s men, Steve King and Neil Campbell on the floor for the Over-40s.
The Masters Open is FIBA's new veterans event, played from 4 to 12 July in the Corinth and Attica region. Ireland entered for the first time, sending eight teams and around 120 players and staff.
McDermott's Over-60s beat Puerto Rico 63–43 and edged Italia Golden Players 50–48. Then came three defeats: 45–52 to Samex Mexico, 36–51 to Australia Masters Green and 36–39 to Australia Masters Gold.
In the third-place game Ireland met Italia Golden Players again, and the rematch went the other way, 45–63. The Over-60s finished fourth.
King, an Eagles forward, has won the double with Limerick twice, in 2012 and in 2026. Campbell, another Limerick Eagles man, was alongside him in the Ireland Over-40s men's squad.
Across the age groups, Ireland's teams came home with medals: gold for the Women's Over-40s and silver for three other Irish sides.
The double-winning season ended in April, and the new Super League season is still to come. Not a bad way to spend the break.
